Getting Started

You start by creating an IFR or VFR flight, then fly the route one more time. Jot down notes about points of interest along the way, such as bearings, altitudes, etc. After completing your notes, (run the IYP application if it is not already running), minimise the simulator and click on the Tour Designer button.

Create Your Intro:
In all probability, the first thing you will likely do is create an introduction ("Intro") for this flight. Here's an example of an Intro:

[captain], you're not going to like what I'm about to tell you. After offloading the 85 bottles of whisky, we are a lot lighter, but when I looked at the fuel gauges earlier, it doesn't look good. We'll just have to take our chances with the fuel we've got, because there are no alternative airports in the area. In any case, let's get underway. Once the aircraft has been checked out, and running, let's head over to runway 3 1. After we lift off, we're going to bear to the left, and head towards the valley. We'll climb to 3,000 feet and hug the mountain line to the left so that we can make a sharp 45 degree bank to the right, and head back over this air field. [captain], I suggest that we run through all of the checklists. It's bad enough that we are going to be flying on fumes today; let's not have any other surprises! When you're all set, just say, Do all checklists. Ok, it's your plane. We're ready to go!
Don't worry about making your prose perfect at the start... you can always edit it later; just as an author does when writing a book.

Create On-Ground Narrations:
You can now add other "on ground" text as needed. Here's a list of the "on ground" events that can be created:

  • BeforeStartup
  • AfterStartup
  • DuringTaxi
  • BeforeTakeoff
  • AfterTouchdown
  • DuringTaxiToGate
  • BeforeParked
  • AfterParked
  • AfterShutdown
  • Summary
Create Airborne Narrations:
The simplest way to create airborne narrations, is to get airborne!   This is where the IYP Tour Designer shines!

For example, let's assume that you takeoff and climb to about 1,600 feet. At this point, you want to tell the pilot to climb to 3,000 feet.   It's easy!   Simply place the aircraft in the PAUSE mode by pressing then "P" key, and click the AboveAltitude1 selection in the Event list. Then, enter your text. i.e.,

[captain], let's climb to 3,000 feet, and remember to keep us close to the mountain on the left, so that we can make a hard right once we approach 3,000 feet, and head back over the air field.
Save your event, and you're done!

Creating an Event

Creating events is pretty straight forward.   Simply minimise your flight simulator, and click on the Tour Designer button.   Select the Event you wish to create from the event list on the left side of the window, and enter the narration and requiste information.  When you are done, press Save Event.   After you have added and/or edited all events, press the FINISHED button to save your changes to disc.

There are, however, two areas that require further explanation:

  • Special Notation
  • AtLocation Function
Special Notation:
You'll note the use of the special notation   [captain]   in both the Intro and AboveAltitude1 narration text above.   Special notation such as this instructs the IYP application to "dynamically replace" the text with other text. In this example, the notation [captain] is replaced with the actual Captain's name, if he/she has entered their name in the Options area.

  • Replace [airspeed] with the current airspeed. e.g., 1 0 5
  • Replace [altitude] with the current altitude. e.g., 6,000
  • Replace [captain] with the Captain's Name if entered in the Options area, or the phrase Captain, if not.
  • Replace [course] with the current course. e.g., 2 7 0
  • Replace [date] with the aircraft's date. e.g., December 7, 2007, etc.
  • Replace [day] with the aircraft's day of the month. e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
  • Replace [dayofweek] with the aircraft's day of the week. e.g., Sunday, Monday, etc.
  • Replace [dayperiod] with the aircraft's period of the day. e.g., morning, afternoon, evening
  • Replace [heading] with the current heading. e.g., 2 6 0
  • Replace [month] with the aircraft's current month. e.g.,
  • Replace [realdate] with today's date. e.g., December 2, 2008, etc.
  • Replace [realday] with today's day of the month. e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
  • Replace [realtime] with today's time of day. e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.
  • Replace [realday] with today's day of the month. e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.
  • Replace [time] with the aircraft's time of day. e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.

AtLocation:
The AtLocation narration is typically the most used facility, and is played to the user when the aircraft comes within a specific distance of a point in space, at a bearing within specified boundaries, wherein the aircraft is above and below specified altitudes.
